Matias Recharte - Drum Set, Hand Drums, Guitar & Bass

M. Ethnomusicology, York University; B. Mus. Performance, Rotterdams Conservatorium, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Matias built his first drumset out of tins, buckets and cans at the age of 12 and from there never stopped learning about music and rhythm. He studied Peruvian and Afro Cuban percussion in Lima, Peru until 2006 when he moved to The Netherlands to study at the World Music Academy of the Rotterdam's Conservatorium.

In 2015 he finished an MA degree in Ethnomusicology from York University in Toronto and is an advanced student of Trichy Sankaran's a South Indian Master percussionist. His teaching style is learner-centered and process-centered. This means that the needs, abilities and interests of each student are taken as the starting point and guiding principle of the lesson planning. It also means that the process of learning technique, repertoire, improvisation and composition are more important than achieving particular musical results. The musical capabilities come as a result of an fun and engaging exploration of music.

Matias is excited to be a part of our CMC faculty this year!
